Die Basketball-Abteilung des Helmstedter SV wurde 1979 von Bogdan Puljevic, dem damaligen Sportlehrer des [[Julianum|Gymnasiums Julianum]], aus einer Basketball-AG heraus gegründet. Erster Abteilungsleiter war bis 1982 Dirk Pullwitt. Nach ihm übernahm Reinhard Brederlow die Aufgaben des Abteilungsleiters und baute die Abteilung in kurzer Zeit zu einer der großen Abteilungen im Helmstedter SV aus. Nicht zuletzt durch die Kooperation mit den im [[Landkreis Helmstedt]] stationierten Soldaten der US-Army konnten von 1980 bis 1986 fünf Aufstiege mit der 1.
