April [[1951]] von dem Apotheker und Lebensmittelchemiker Dr. [[Willi Willecke]] eröffnet. Der Name erklärt sich aus der unmittelbaren Nachbarschaft zu den [[Braunschweigische Kohlen-Bergwerke|Braunschweigischen Kohlenbergwerken]], die damals wie heute die Gegend in Helmstedt mit ihren [[Tagebau]]-Bergwerken prägten. Seit 1992 leitet Barbara Willecke-Hitrov den Betrieb in der zweiten Generation.
